I have been excited to post about Core Course Week!! Core Course Week is a unique aspect of the DIS program, and it is essentially taking a several day field trip into an area near Copenhagen with my main core course, Prostitution and the Sex Trade. We spent 3 days traveling to various parts of Sweden and Denmark to delve into understanding the differences between the Danish and Swedish models of sex work, the various perceptions of those models, and how it impacts the workers themselves.
Essentially, Denmark has a model of decriminalization, meaning that all laws that they previously held surrounding sex work were repealed. There are no laws criminalizing sex work, but there are also no laws protecting sex workers. They can work as they choose in society and they pay taxes to the government, but they do not receive government benefits from paying these taxes. Although Denmark has this model of letting sex workers work as they choose, they highly encourage sex workers to move out of the field and find other lines of work, and actively promote organizations and nonprofits to help make that possible.
During the week, we were able to meet an organization called LivaRehab, which works to help protect women from domestic abuse, as well as try to treat those who have been harmed by sex work and try to encourage them to find alternative career paths. These two speakers contradicted one another, and created a larger question of agency, what it means to be a victim, and are circumstances, such as having a low income, be institutionalized coercion.
Once in Sweden, we spent a few days there meeting various individuals with numerous points of views to help us understand the Swedish model and sex work in general. The Swedish model is oftentimes referred to as the Nordic Model, and sex work itself is not illegal, but the purchase of sex is illegal.
